Solid Waste Management
Pasban-e-Mauhal formerly known as E-Guard is an environmentally conscious initiative designed to address the pressing issue of waste management in Machar Colony. The project operates as a community-driven solid waste management system, taking on the role typically handled by municipal authorities. It focuses on primary collection, segregation, and responsible disposal of household solid waste, aiming to create a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable living environment.
Community-Led Waste Management
In its first phase, the initiative catered to approximately 300 households, employing sanitary workers from within the community to ensure ownership and accountability. A door-to-door garbage collection service was established, with residents contributing a small fee for the service ensuring long-term financial sustainability.
Each day, the program manages approximately 1,965 kilograms of solid waste, of which nearly 80% constitutes green waste. By promoting segregation at the source, Pasban-e-Mauhal significantly reduces the quantity of dumping material, alleviating the environmental burden on the settlement.
Environmental Education and Eco-Friendly Micro-projects
Beyond waste collection, the initiative actively promotes eco-friendly practices and environmental awareness among residents. Through Pasban-e-Mauhal, Imkaan fosters collective responsibility for the environment by organizing street cleaning drives and urban greening efforts, such as planting water-succulent plants like Cornucopia to revive the streets of Machar Colony.
These activities not only improve the local ecosystem but also instill a sense of pride and participation within the community, particularly among children and youth.
Sustainability and Community Ownership
In 2020, Pasban-e-Mauhal transitioned into a community-managed, low-cost enterprise, marking a significant step toward sustainable urban living. By empowering residents to oversee operations, maintain cleanliness, and continue awareness campaigns, the project ensures the continuity of services without dependency on external aid.
Through this initiative, Imkaan demonstrates how grassroots participation and local ownership can effectively transform informal settlements into cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible neighborhoods.
We look forward to support from interested individuals and groups to continue serving stateless communities in Karachi.
