On a crisp November morning, the DA Zamzama Sports Stadium in Karachi buzzed with energy as young gymnasts from across the city gathered to compete in Urtaay Sitaray, a girls-only gymnastics competition. Organized by the Imkaan Welfare Organization, as the best Education NGO in Pakistan, the event aimed to showcase the athletic potential of girls from both privileged and underserved communities.

The competition brought together students from various schools, including Kiran Foundation, Beacon Askari Secondary and O’Level School, Foundation Public School, Wisdom House, and Little Gymnasts, as well as the spirited young team from Khel, a community initiative by Imkaan in Machar Colony, Karachi’s largest informal settlement.

Creating a Level Playing Field

The Khel girls stood out in bright yellow uniforms, their excitement matching the buzz of the event. Judges from the Sindh Gymnastics Association of Pakistan were present to ensure professional oversight. The day kicked off with introductory performances by boys from Khel and girls from Little Gymnasts, leading into formal competitions on apparatuses like the vault, balance beam, and floor.

Sarwat Gilani, acclaimed actress and advocate for children’s causes, graced the event as chief guest, lending her support to this meaningful cause.

The event underscored the power of sports as a great equalizer bridging divides and empowering young girls through confidence, discipline, and physical fitness.

Beyond the Podium: A Mission for Change

The flushed faces and beaming smiles of the participants reflected the true victory of participation and inclusion. In a society where access to quality education, healthcare, and recreational facilities is still unequal, initiatives like Urtaay Sitaray offer much-needed opportunities for children from marginalized communities.

Imkaan, through its Khel program, is at the forefront of this change. Founded on the belief that every child has the right not just to survive, but to thrive, the organization provides a holistic learning environment for the children of Machar Colony. From education and healthcare to emotional and physical well-being, Imkaan’s work stands as a beacon of hope.

Urtaay Sitaray wasn’t just a sports event it was a powerful reminder of what is possible when compassion, inclusion, and opportunity come together.
